In Brindisi this name covers two fortresses, the Castello Svevo or land castle built by Frederick II in 1227 on the inner harbour and the Castello Alfonsino with the Forte a Mare on the island of Sant'Andrea at the mouth of the outer harbour. Both are protected monuments used for guided tours, exhibitions and cultural events.
